LISTEN

BY JULIA DIGERONIMO

When your own thoughts are clogging your head,

No one else’s can get through yours,

if you aren’t listening–

“You can’t just–

I’ve already told you–”

Whenever I fight with my parents I beg them to listen.

And when they fight with me they beg me to do the same.

Our words fall on deaf ears because

no one is listening.

All I can hear are the words flying through my head

“If you just listened–

you’d understand why–  ”

And the only thing they hear is what they want to.

I beg them to hear me,

And they think they do.

I tell them –

“I am listening–”

Because I think I am.

But the only thing I am hearing

 is how they are wrong

And that I am right–

How do you listen.
